He continues to design from nature, with nature in mind, and creates the most beautiful, sustainable lighting. The company’s newest range of lights is inspired by plankton, so some of the profits are heading back to the ocean. He also continues to fight for the rights of designers and the terrible way that some people rip off designs, with his own lighting designs being copied and sold illegally.

“When the design for a product is inspired so strongly by nature, it seems natural to give something back to nature!”  David Trubridge.

Diatom and plankton are microscopic organisms found in virtually any body of water on Earth. Under the microscope, their forms are stunningly beautiful and seemingly infinite in shape and design. Diatom and plankton are at the base of the entire oceanic food chain. Through photosynthesis, they generate more oxygen than all the world’s tropical rainforests — enough for our every second breath. What a beautiful basis to design a light that virtually floats overhead in your home. Amongst other critical environmental issues, the health of the oceans is becoming one of the most alarming and one that David feels personally connected with. As a sailor, swimmer, fisherman and paddle boarder David has an almost daily interaction with the sea.

The two designs in this oceanic-inspired range are Maru and Navicula. When one of either design is sold, the company will give $50 directly to the Ocean Recovery Alliance. Ocean Recovery Alliance is an NGO based in Hong Kong and California that has been working on creative solutions that can scale across businesses, countries and communities for the past 10 years. They run ocean clean-up projects taking plastic out of waterways and training locals to maintain these initiatives.

It’s great knowing this contribution will directly result in some plastic collection/prevention projects” he says. When seeking a charitable company to enter a donation partnership with, David enlisted the help of his son William who was already working with Ocean Recovery Alliance to raise their profile. William is a world record holding freediver so also has a unique relationship with, and respect for, the oceans. David and his company liked what the Ocean Recovery Alliance was doing and how direct the funding would be in helping with efforts. “Ocean Recovery Alliance isn’t one of those bureaucratic top heavy trusts, it uses all the money it receives to make direct actions and run projects and teams”.
