Throws and Quilts really brighten up your home, bring warmth and are of course very practical! Not only that, but layering during cooler weather, rather than putting the heater on the instant it gets a tad chilly, is far better for the environment and your hip pocket. Our range of traditional, double sided Kantha Quilt/Throws are a delight to behold, and so much better in real life. These high quality Kantha throws are made in the centuries old tradition, using layers of old saris and discarded cloths, which traditionally were made in the Indian states of West Bengal and Odisha, and in Bangladesh. So not only are they practical, but beautiful. Originally they were made by very poor Bengali women out of necessity. Old cloth in Bangladesh is said to keep the user safe from harm. Women stitched kantha for their loved ones – their children, their husbands, their parents, and generations of women may have worked on one quilt.
Being reversible you can use either side, or fold over for a contrasting look on your bed or sofa. Each quilt is unique and has its own personality.
These are all made from recycled Saris and the Kanthas are 223 cms by 194 cms – which is a generous Queen. Can also fit a King in many cases and be doubled over for a single.
Handmade by the artisans at Prokritee Fair Trade Bangladesh through our beautiful partners.
Check out our range here – we have small numbers each time we order stock, to reflect the individual nature of these textiles and there will be an ever changing range.
Every throw is unique in colour and pattern. You will not be disappointed in purchasing one of these beautiful pieces for your home. We use them all year round on our beds and they are perfect across all seasons – throw on the top of your winter quilt to decorate your bed, or use with a sheet, or alone, during warmer months. Also fabulous for covering a sofa or couch and they wash really well.
We advocate the payment of higher prices to exporters, as well as higher social and environmental standards. If you don’t know where something is coming from, it is much harder to know the conditions under which it was made. We work with fair trade groups, directly with makers of homewares, furniture, textiles and art, and those who are working in a sustainable way. One of our favourite suppliers of items for our shop is Siham Craftlink. You will see some of our gorgeous products such as our recycled sari kantha quilts and sari rugs, jute mats and rugs, and all sorts of baskets and lovely things for your home.
