Who are you? Tell us about the people behind the business

My name is Kerry, I’m 34 years old, and I’m mamma to a beautiful 8 month old girl named Hermione. I was born in England, raised in Perth, and fell in love with Melbourne, which I now call home. My previous background is in training, and prior to LLL I was National Trainer for Microsoft.

How did you start the business and what inspired you?

Lovely Lady Lamps came about when my partner and I were moving into a new place and we just needed to buy some lamps for home. Upon entering a popular lighting store, we were confronted with a sea of mass produced (yet expensive), boring white lampshades on bases of the same nature.

After searching around a little it became clear that if I wanted something different I was going to have to make it myself! My first lampshades were pretty messy, but I persevered! I got addicted to making lamp shades from beautiful fabrics, and before I knew it my house was full of lamps! My partner was not oblivious to this, and told me that I better start selling some off, and so I booked a market stall, and Lovely Lady Lamps began.Lovely Lady Lamps - vintage upcycled lampshades with vintage bases on the Sustainable Home Hub www.sustainablehomehub.com Lovely Lady Lamps - vintage upcycled lampshades with vintage bases on the Sustainable Home Hub www.sustainablehomehub.com

What are your thoughts on sustainability and how is this part of your business and own home?

I believe that sustainability is an ideal that many people can find overwhelming to achieve. With our increasingly busy lives it can be hard to look closely at every single item you use/purchase, and try to make a sustainable choice. I also believe that everybody has the time to start small and work from there. Choosing just some sustainable items is a great start, and if everybody does it, it will make a huge difference to our planet. Being lovers of vintage, we often find it easy to make the sustainable choice, and we’re finding the wealth of information available to us now is making it easier as time goes on.

Do you have any tips for other people wanting to create a sustainable home?
Start small, and go from there! Choosing one sustainable item over something else is all it takes to get started. Challenge yourself to see how often you can do it. And make use of fantastic resources like the Sustainable Home Hub, and even Instagram, for ideas on how to make more aspects of your life sustainable.

Would you like to share a favourite piece of work?
I think my favourite lamp to make was this gorgeous mid century atomic teak base. For the shade I cut up some curtains which I found in England, made from an incredible fabric called “Casamila”, designed by David Bartle for Heals in the early 70s.Lovely Lady Lamps - vintage upcycled lampshades with vintage bases on the Sustainable Home Hub www.sustainablehomehub.com
